Can we talk about the smallest member?  It has the power of life and death. It gets out of control very easily and causes things around us to get out of control as well.  This smallest member is linked to hell itself and it creates many problems for ourselves and others. It cannot be tamed, but it can be contained. It's evil by nature. It can be a death-dealing poison. It's sharp like a knife killing without drawing blood. At times it can even seem peaceful and sweet and in a flash it becomes bitter and harmful. Every one of those descriptions teaches us about the powerful and deadly nature of our tongue. The things we say and how we speak.

Many of us have experienced cruel words, ego destroying criticism, excessive anger, sarcasm, public and private humiliation, hurtful nicknames, betrayal of secrets, rumors, and malicious gossip.  In school we learned the golden rule... "Do unto others as you would want them to do unto you." You would think that would extend into "Say unto others as you would have them say unto you?"  I mean who hasn't at one time said something in anger that was mean & hurtful (and we cloak it as just being honest)?

Think on this, we are the only creation of God that can speak. And just as God spoke and all that we know was created, we in His image are able to speak and create as well. Are we speaking good or harm?  As Christians we all must grow, & yes growing is a process,  in the ability to control and discipline what we say to and about others. We may even stumble ( I have had many stumbles myself) in many ways but we must realize the importance of controlling our tongue.

Words are so powerful, and because our words can be untamed; they can become so poisonous.  So together lets grow in...

1. Restraining our tongues-James 3:2-3

2. Not be boastful and prideful in words-James 3:4-5

3. Wise and discerning when sharing conversationsJames 3:6  & Proverbs 18:21

4. Lean on God for our words- James 3:7-8  & Psalm 141:3

5. Make our speech be healing, blessed, sweet, and fresh- James 3: 9-12

The smallest member has the power of life and death.

I choose LIFE!!!!  What will you choose?
Ephesians 4:29 "Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers."
